Bike for Mike 2017: Cargobike edition

This past weekend, Bikeables did something no one has ever done for the annual charity ride Bike for Mike -- we rode cargo bikes... for the full 75km route.

What is Bike for Mike?

Bike for Mike is an annual bike ride, now in its 7th year, that was created to increase awareness of the joy and benefits of cycling, and to raise funds so that every child in Hamilton can have a bike of their own!

Since 2011, Bike for Mike has helped to provide over 2250 bikes for deserving children and families in Hamilton. The Mike's Bikes program ensures that each child learns bike safety and maintenance, while helping to foster pride of ownership and regular bike usage.

This annual fundraiser is for such a great cause, and we are so happy to be a part of it. Thanks to the support of our amazing customers, we hit our fundraising goal of $500!

The Big Ride

We got off to a slightly chilly start on Sunday morning, but the sun soon warmed us up, making for a perfect day of riding. Our first stop was at the rest station in Ancaster, where we did some light stretching, had a snack, and enjoyed some of the sports drink on offer.

From there, we headed into the rolling countryside. As we worked our way west on Jerseyville Road W, we confronted some challenging headwinds, but the sunshine and beautiful scenery really balanced things out.
We stopped at a side road along Jerseyville Road West for a snack and a stretch. That's our teammate Khadijah in the orange, and our friend Alexei!

At Bethel Church & Governors we snapped a quick photo of our bikes at the outer edge of Hamilton, which marked the halfway point of our ride 38 kilometres in!

From there, we rode back eastward, and enjoyed a great tailwind nearly the entire way. At the top of Sydenham, we ran into a local cycling legend, Dave (aka "Thor"), who you can see out on his bike practically every day, criss-crossing Hamilton. He was really impressed to see us on our cargo bikes way out in the country!

From there, it wasn't long before we crossed the finish line at Collective Arts Brewery, where we enjoyed a cold one as the event wrapped up!

We truly had a blast, and we're already looking forward to next year's ride!
